Seeing that it was the holidays and all, we had some free time to go out to check on our Wild Mustangs. See how they are handling the winter.
For being the end of December and with snow on the ground, the 3 herds we encountered were all doing just fine. They aren’t supposed to look like your normal tamed farm horse. Fattened up and hooves all well manicured.
Actually, when you see these fine creatures in the wild, you notice that they are actually in better condition than most of those we see caged up around town. These horses have the open range to exercise, graze in and keep their hooves properly filed. Like they are suppose to. From watching them, you can tell they are all doing just fine on their own.
In the early morning sun shining off the snow. In the peacefulness of the surroundings, you watch as these horses go about their business of grazing and seeking water, you start to realize just what a privilege and an honor it is to be able to roam amongst these beautiful symbols of the western United States.
This is their home and their land, so we never over stay our welcome. Stopped, looked, shot a few pictures and said our hellos to them. We were missing a few from last time. The paint and few others we normally visit with seem to have vanished deeper into the valley. Hopefully we will see them again on the range.
It’s painful to read of their abuse at the hands of the federal Government. The BLM is misleading the public and the media on this issue. They won a partial victory in their latest battle for Northern Nevada Mustangs. A federal judge says next week’s controversial roundup of 2,500 wild horses in Nevada can proceed. why? What harm are they doing that is any worse than the cattle that graze along side them?? Read the article here
